BOSTON, MA [December 17, 2021] -- The Chelsea Curve have spent most of the year releasing new music via a string of eight monthly singles dubbed The Singles Scene. Now the Boston mod-pop trio are bringing the songs to life, raising a glass to 2021 and celebrating accordingly with three action-packed parties at The Jungle in Somerville.
Dubbed The Chelsea Curve Singles Scene Residency, the parties go down over three nights: Friday, December 17 with Gene Dante and the Future Starlets and Britpop Social Club; Friday, January 7 with Muck and the Mires and DJ Mike Gioscia; and Friday, January 28 with The Shang Hi Los and DJ Sherman. And things get started early for the after-work crowd, with doors at 5 p.m. and wrapped by 8 p.m. -- giving plenty of time for Friday night revelry afterwards.
The Chelsea Curve kickstarted their Singles Scene back in March, and wrapped it up eight months and eight songs later in October. Now, as the trio gets ready to release their debut album on Red On Red Records this winter -- the aforementioned eight tracks, plus new songs! -- they’ve set their sights to partying under the bright holiday lights of Union Square.
To bring it all together, we’ve hosted a roundtable between The Chelsea Curve and their residency guests to talk about 2021, why they’re excited to play their respective residency night, and just what they have coming into the New Year.
Part 1, The Chelsea Curve
publi*sist: What can fans expect from these residency shows?
Tim Gillis: A swingin’ vibe. Cocktails and dancing, with amazing DJs, for a chill start. Then killer live music from some of the finest bands in the land (and us), for a sweaty finish.
Ron Belanger: A celebration. A different kind of show from the usual four bands assaulting your ears for four hours. DJ, conversations, mingling. A good way to hang with us and have a different kind of night out.
Linda Pardee: You can expect great music and a fun time with our smashing guest bands and dis! We’re celebrating our singles, so you’ll hear plenty of them. Relax, have a sip of whatever, and don’t be afraid of the dance floor! Swing it!
How good will it feel to blast out all the Singles Scene singles now that all the songs are released?
Tim Gillis: We’ve got a lot of pent-up energy to unleash! Really looking forward to rocking out the singles, and more, in a live setting.
Ron Belanger: Well these songs have always been fun to play even before we released them. The issue now though is that people know what they are supposed to sound like! So we can’t goof them up and say “hey, that’s how the song is supposed to go”. (Think Pee Wee Herman saying “I meant to do that” when he wipes out on his bike). But we’ll practice so that won’t happen.
Linda Pardee: Man! It’s gonna feel so great to celebrate them and give them their time to shine. It seems like we just got started with releasing our first single, “Girl Cavedog,” back in March and here we are now wrapped up and getting ready to party!
How did you decide on the bands/DJs invited to take part?
Tim Gillis: Bands were a combo of long-time faves and band crushes that we haven’t had a chance to play with in a long while. Aside from the top-notch music, they’re also just a cool hang all the way around. We have close personal relationships with three of the most sympatico DJs in town. They totally fit our scene and it was just a question of who could play when. It was a no-brainer.
Ron Belanger: Sexual favors, bribes and favoritism, of course!
Linda Pardee: It was really hard to narrow down our list as we know so many stellar bands! Our residency guest bands have a fantastic vibe, style, flair and great music - and just fit the bill perfectly! Our top-shelf DJs bring the culture and sounds of the scene we so love and complete the picture solidly!
What's on tap for The Chelsea Curve in 2022?
Tim Gillis: We’re gonna put the pedal down; we’re looking to do all the things. More releases, more new material, more live shows, more touring. It’ll be busy – we’re hoping to be unavoidable!
Ron Belanger: I think 2022 is going to be the year for the Chelsea Curve. Full-length record, a trip to Europe, some regional American dates and some summer festivals. And probably a few new pairs of shoes.
Linda Pardee: Our album comes out in March, containing all the singles of The Singles Scene, plus early Chelsea favorites and brand new tracks! Our songs are out in the big wide world, and we would like to get out there too and do some touring!
Part 2, The Residency Guests
publi*sist: So, how was your 2021? What was the highlight?
Evan Shore of Muck and the Mires: Getting to perform live again. Making up our canceled 2020 shows on both coasts and England and seeing all of our old pals again. …And getting picked as Coolest Song in the World on SiriusXM’s Underground Garage.
Dan Kopko of The Shang Hi Los: 2021 was a great year for The Shang Hi Los! The highlight was definitely having Little Steven select our song "Sway Little Player" as Underground Garage’s "Coolest Song In The World" earlier this year!
DJ Sherman: 2021 was better than 2020. The highlight? Supporting The Chelsea Curve at Melrose Porchfest.
Gene Dante: My 2021 was riding a killer wave of creativity, strategy, and planning for the (slow coming) end to the pandemic. The highlight being the release of my new album DL/UX.
Britpop Social Club: We woke up just in time for this party, and it turns out we’ve been asleep since October 2019, when our Cambridge brunch party celebrated the 25th anniversary of Suede’s Dog Man Star. What did we miss? Hopefully not too much. Our 2021 starts December 17.
What led you to accept the offer to play The Chelsea Curve’s residency?
Evan Shore of Muck and the Mires: The promise of a backstage deli platter.
Dan Kopko of The Shang Hi Los: We LOVE The Chelsea Curve! We're also looking to hook up, and we heard this show would be something of a “Singles Scene.” (See what we did there? OK, we'll stick with music and leave the comedy to others!)
DJ Sherman: Why not?
Gene Dante: My undying love for Linda Bean Pardee led me to accept the offer to join The Chelsea Curve on their residency. Also, I'm a sucker for early shows because they provide me more time for post-show celebrations with you lovely people.
Britpop Social Club: Few bands understand our anglophile affinity quite like The Chelsea Curve, and even fewer bands are able to connect British Invasion and Cool Britannia all while maintaining a Boston mod-pop accent. We were all raised on the same records, trainers, and an uncanny ability to spend ungodly sums of money on UK imports before the streaming era eradicated our stylistic souls.
What can fans expect from your residency live performance?
Evan Shore of Muck and the Mires: Sixteen songs in 40 minutes on a six-foot-deep stage.
Dan Kopko of The Shang Hi Los: Expect the unexpected!!! It will come when you least expect it!
DJ Sherman So if you've come in off the street, and you're beginning to feel the heat, well listen-up buster, you’d better start to move your feet to the rockinest, rock-steady beat of… DJ Sherman.
Gene Dante: Fans attending this show can expect something warm, wonderful, and intimate, without the risk of contracting an STD.
Britpop Social Club: A Slight Return to the Disco 2000 of our Popscene youth, where all the Daydreamer Girls & Boys will experience Great Things from One To Another and sing along with Common People, the Misshapes, and the Outsiders, feeling a Connection amongst a Wide Open Space in a Chemical World in order to Live Forever. For Tomorrow, the Beautiful Ones will feel like Trash from the Cigarettes & Alcohol, and Stutter onto A New Morning, but on this Olympian night we gotta Roll With It. D’You Know What I Mean? Well, Alright!
What else do you have going on? What else do the people gotta know?
Evan Shore of Muck and the Mires: We are heading to Spain in March to make up even more shows. Come by the jungle and say adios!
Dan Kopko of The Shang Hi Los: The Shang Hi Los just released our new single, "Plymouth Rock," on RumBar Records, and we are working on our first full length, due out in early '22!!!
DJ Sherman Don’t miss it!
Gene Dante: The "after work crowd" show is a win for anyone who "can't stay up late" for whatever mundane reason, and/or a great way to kickstart an exciting weekend. Think about it: You've already got a killer concert under your belt, and it's not even 9pm on a Friday night.
Britpop Social Club: Let’s all meet up in the year 2021. And 2022.

The Chelsea Curve short bio:
The Chelsea Curve have always been your favorite band, providing the constant song playing in your head as scenes, styles, and sounds change around you. With a sonic template rooted in retro mod-pop but with enough snarl to roll with the punks and whipsmart hooks to hang with the rock and roll crowd, the Boston trio have in 2021 unleashed The Singles Scene, a string of monthly releases featuring ultra-melodic earworms off their forthcoming debut album, set for winter 2022 release via red-hot indie label Red On Red Records. Everyone who listens to The Chelsea Curve connects the band’s influence to their own personal favorites of yesterday, but with eight Singles Scene tracks released so far this year, and global radio play amplifying their presence louder with each offering, The Chelsea Curve are quickly forging their own rock and roll path connecting the past to the present.
