Gene Dante on the aesthetic vision behind the 'DL/UX' cover art
The glam rock dynamo new album set for release October 15 via H1 Massive
Feast those bedroom eyes upon this -- it's the artwork for Gene Dante’s new album DL/UX, out next Friday, October 15 via H1 Massive.
It's also the cover to the accompanying 40-page lyric and art book, which provides an enhanced visual component to the glam rock aesthete’s forthcoming album, released digitally as well as on double-vinyl, compact disc, and cassette. The photo was captured by Jenny Bergman of The Secret Bureau of Art & Design.
Here’s Gene on the vision for the image:
“In general, I’m not a fan of participating in standard studio photo shoots. They can all too easily become static, posed, and uninteresting. To avoid that and insure there was some serious energy, Jenny at The Secret Bureau conceived a Studio-54-meets-speakeasy vibe.”
The 'DL/UX' album front cover is a great shot of the 'green room'. Live shots were taken during a live performance at Ralph’s Diner in Worcester, which also served as the entrance to and exit from the speakeasy. The speakeasy shots were taken at the Brighton Sound Museum and Starlet HQ. Essentially, we held a cocktail party at Starlet HQ, invited a few friends to drop by, and shot the glam/tragic chaos. Many conversations, and subsequent photo compositions, were organic.
The artbook is a robust visual companion to the flow of the album, which comes with a CD of the album (in drag as a vintage 45). It has a 'found art' feel, replete with images of flyers, posters, polaroids, candids and live shots, undeveloped film rolls, and lyrics. We aim to create a similar vibe with the vinyl double album, but with its own unique layout and flow.”
Pretty soon, you'll hear it as well as see it.
