“This song scratches all kinds of itches for me: the rhythm of the shifting time, the liquid interplay between synth, bass & guitar, the soft harmonies. I get something new in my ears every time through.” -- Adam 12

BOSTON, MASS. [September 24, 2021] -- We’re taught at a young age about the duality in life that surrounds us: the good and the bad, the dark and the light, conscious and the subconscious, and on and on. But the two sides that guide us through our lives are very rarely so cut and dry; there’s a cadence to the relationships around us that allow us to live freely or otherwise, and how we identify and treat them are keys to our path forward.
For Adi Sun, the relationship with this duality comes to the surface in her new single “Twin Flame,” set for release on Friday, September 24. It’s the third and latest single from the Boston musician and songwriter, who re-surfaced as a solo artist last year after the dissolving of her alternative rock band Phenomenal Sun. Like last year’s “Bella Sun Lever” and February’s “My Fault,” Twin Flame is another personal, introspective twirl from the trans performer who continues to shape her own identity reflected by the world around her.
“‘Twin Flame’ is the equivocal story of someone so infected by a romantic connection, they lose themselves in emotional co-dependence,” Adi says. “It’s a tragedy of passion and devotion but also psychic connection, attachment, disconnection and surrender.” Adi adds: “A friend of mine once said that, in love ‘once a flame, always a flame’. In some cases I think that’s true really, the heart wants what the heart wants and sometimes it gets us into trouble. A flame has the power to destroy and to purify, and in this story I think it does a bit of both.”
The concept of a ‘twin flame’ is akin to that of a soul mate, except that they inadvertently act as a teacher and catalyst for each other, mirroring each other’s deepest desires, needs and fears. Due to the intensity of the connection, a runner/chaser dynamic is often established; it’s up to each individual to assert independence, heal from past wounding, and work toward their unique spiritual purpose in order to come back together and achieve lasting union. “For myself, I simply believe that people enter and exit our lives in order to help us grow,” Adi says. “Some are meant to stick around, and some aren’t.”
There’s a floating, almost pliable mood to “Twin Flame” that aches and turns with each passage. It came together in a fierce burst of emotion, Adi says, as if the years that preceded it -- the positive and negative, the loving and the destructive, the good decisions and the tragic ones -- instantly merged into a creative spell that allowed her to open a window into her soul. Adi Sun’s path forward has been more of a zig-zag than a straight line, and the reflection in the journey hasn’t always had the best of intentions. Though “Twin Flame” is a departure from the more rock-leaning Phenomenal Sun sound, her solo efforts are a melancholic spin around a person who has finally accepted that not having the answers is the best response to a question.
“I am in the process of building an entirely new foundation for myself,” she says. “If I went through and listed all of the obstacles I’ve created in order to dim my own light, we might be here for a while. A big part of this process is taking responsibility. There’s just no point in lying to myself anymore. Perspective is everything and I’ve learned many lessons from the negative patterns of thinking and feeling that lead to years of addiction and depression, self-sadism and all of that. I have appreciation for the darkness now, because it’s ultimately what generates the fertile soil for new, healthier growth.”
Where this journey takes her is yet to be written. And that’s ok, whether she has a co-pilot alongside or not.
“I’ve committed my life to pursuing the Great Work,” she concludes. “‘Twin Flame’, ‘My Fault’ and ‘Bella Sun Lever’, like all my creations, are just stepping stones along the way. I create as a way to reflect and heal from painful experiences... to create beauty from the dark and the light. It’s taken years to heal and appreciate the mirrors within and outside myself. It’s a continuous process, and a big part of it has been learning to release my mind from the bonds of concepts like ‘good and bad’ and simply have gratitude for it all.”

Additional press quotes from Adi Sun on ‘Twin Flame’:
“‘Twin Flame’ was written the moment I realized this beautiful connection was ending. It came out of the fear that there would be no other bond like it. So you cling, even though it hurts. I was left so confused and dejected, and those emotions had no place to go, so I took that pain and longing and turned it into something that I find beautiful.”
“I don’t think true love could exist in the world without loss and grief. Somehow they’re intertwined. To live is to sacrifice. Sometimes the bonds of love become so entangled they need to be cut.”
“I’m a water sign. Love is my currency. My emotions may not be balanced all the time, but I’ll be damned if I’m going to let a broken heart stop me from moving forward and trying again.”
“Sometimes neither lover can expect what will happen in a connection. Even though you think you know where your heart lies, things can change at any moment and that’s ok. It’s part of life. When it comes to finding the partnership that’s meant for me, I’ve given that over to the divine, like I say in the song [‘Twin Flame’].”

Media praise for Adi Sun:
“‘My Fault’ is raw and inviting in nature, welcoming us into the aching heart of our protagonist. Void of fluff, the song skates and builds in an organic landscape, filled with distorted synthesizers, soaring vocal harmonies, and raw low end warmth.” _Glide Magazine
“‘Bella Sun Lever’ [is] a fidgety guitar-rock number that steps into more unbalanced waters than Adi Sun’s previous band, and there’s a few layers of by-design interpretation to that line of creativity… The track rises and falls, swirling forward with a constant buzz, weighted by Sun’s weathered howl, that again draws back to the ’90s. And that’s by design, as usual.” _Vanyaland
“The dreaminess on ‘My Fault’ is heavy. It floats ethereally on lush guitar melodies standing pretty but edgy too and when big power chords erupt there is an exquisite musicality present that feels commanding.” _ American Pancake
“Adi Sun has left behind the shoegaze leaning alt rock of their band Phenomenal Sun to strike out solo. The result is a more meditative and vulnerable sound that spools out lush and languid. The gauzy sonics of Sun’s former work are still there, only now they are subtler and more refined, and an exciting jumping off point for where they’ll go next”. _Postcard Elba
